Most young people stay on in education after 16, and some will go into higher education at 18 whilst others will look for work or training at 17 or 18. If you decide you want to look for work or training look for a job which will give you training.

You could look to apply for an Apprenticeship  - this will give you experience and training leading to NVQ 2, 3 or 4 in your chosen work area. You could also apply for work based training like Foundation Learning which will help give you the skills employers are looking for.

Here’s what happened to young people who’ve recently left school in Tameside:

Full time training  98

  • Males 56
  • Females 42

Full time employment with training, including apprenticeships  117

  • Males 77
  • Females 40

Other full time employment  47

  • Males 26
  • Females 21

262 young people left school in 2010 and went into full time training or full time employment and the main job areas they entered were:

  • Miscellaneous Occupations                  20.6%
  • Vehicle Trades                                       9.9%
  • Other Skilled Trades                              9.2%

While different jobs regularly become available it's likely that these will remain typical of the types of opportunities locally.
