Choices for Work

Part Time Working

This could mean working a few hours a week to working virtually full time.

More jobs are being offered with flexible hours and increasingly people are working part time, often in two jobs.  There are part time opportunities in a wide range of job areas. It's possible for a full time job to be split and for two or more people to job share the position.

What does it mean for you?

As a part time worker you have the same employment rights as any other employee.

  • You can expect to
  • get the same rates of pay as a full time employee
  • be trained
  • have holidays pro rata to comparable full time workers
  • have any career break schemes, contractual and parental leave made available to you in the same way as for full-time workers
  • not be treated less favourably when workers are selected for redundancy

There's more information at Directgov.

Part time work for students

Probably most students at college or university find a part time job to help support themselves – just make sure that it does not affect your ability to study or damage your long term career plans!
